How Bitcoin Became a Game Changer Overnight - IPWatchdog ...

I think we have reached the moment where “not your keys, not your coins” is more important than ever.

You have all heard about Michael Saylor of MicroStrategy gobbling up 38,250 bitcoin for $425 million.
This MicroStrategy event will be looked back upon as “the shot fired from the starting pistol” marking a new beginning, a new race into bitcoin from an unprecedented wave of institutional and corporate adoption.
These new adopters are not average joe’s.
These people are entering the game with a level of sophisticated power that we simple plebs and humble sat stackers simply cannot compete with.
However, we have ONE single sure-fire way to protect ourselves.
That is, get your coins off of the exchanges and into your own self custody… NOW.
With this new influx of powerful people, there will be many more critical eyes looking into all the nooks and crannies of the bitcoin space, to ensure they will benefit from bitcoin for their own self interests. (This is good.)
The big players want a 21 million hard cap and “number go up” just as much as you do. They do not want fractional reserve and rehypothecation. They will hire professional watchdogs in the private sector and they will push regulation in the public sector to ensure that bitcoins fundamentals will not be compromised.
If/when some exchange or custodian is ousted for having some bitcoin fractional reserves or some other form of malpractice results in lost bitcoin (intentional or unintentional) you can be certain that the big boys with their teams of lawyers and executive institutional relationships will be catered to first.
They will be protected, meanwhile we will be lucky to get any scraps once the dust settles.
They will receive special treatment that we cannot expect the luxury of.
The exchanges won’t care about you.
Your losses are a simple calculation that they have already planned to write off and move on from. You will not have the funds or the power to fight them and recover your losses.
If you have any amount of bitcoin on any exchange that you care about and you are reading these words right now… I implore you to take the time now to think all of this through and take good decisive actions very soon.
Your bitcoin can only be taken from you if you do not control your keys.
Win this war now by avoiding the battle altogether.
Take custody of your bitcoin while you still can.

Post-Battle Assessments, Future Possibilities, Meta, Mission Creep, Commentary and Ideas

Greetings!
I've been sick for a few days and I'm a little fuzzy right now, so please forgive any typos and so forth. I find when I'm not feeling well and need to occupy my brain with something is the best time to ponder about big ideas and events and the meanings and possibilities thereof, and I actually have the time to put fingers to keys and try to make sense of such things with my typical walls of text. I'd like to address several things here, so let's get started.
First off, is a postmortem of the Wiki Month celebration for #GG's 5th anniversary. I'm proud to say that most of my "big ideas" have lead to success in one degree or another over the past half decade, but this was not one of them. Apart from our resident hero u/Mikisayaka33 and a few others, turnout for the #GG Wiki party was very small. This is mitigated by several factors including:
The deplatforming of 8chan and scattering of the #GG community there The split between KiA and KiA2 absorbing a ton of the Reddit community's creative energy The banning of Mombot and with her the last major central node in the old #GG Twitter network
With so much going on, I couldn't expect that many people were going to take a great deal of time to do the fiddly, exacting work needed to make good articles on a Wiki about troubles in the world of interactive Mongolian flipbook paintings. Nevertheless, good work has been done there. Hopefully it will continue to pay dividends.
Secondly, let's talk about 8chan. As many of you are doubtlessly aware, 8chan was taken offline by Cloudflare around August 10th, as we were in the middle of planning for #GG's anniversary events and shitposting away. Almost simultaneously, the Reddit community 8chan was shut down and a huge schism erupted here over the board staff's behavior, leading to the explosive growth of KiA2. In the month of August, almost on top of the 5th year anniversary, an entire #GG hub community found itself scattered to the wind and another fractured in half. Shortly thereafter, the last BIG #GG voice on social media was suspended. To top it all off 8chan's previous owner, Frederick (Hotwheels) Brennan, pulled a face-heel turn and went on a crusade against 8chan. He went so far as to team up with corrupt journalists on Twitter to put pressure on the site owners, to such an extent as to file paperwork to get the owner's citizenship requests revoked in the Philippines. He has alluded to using the substantial Bitcoin donations that 8chan users once contributed to him to pay for DDoS attacks on the site, threatened to write and release an open source flood script to keep it offline, completely reversed his stances on Internet censorship and free speech, and recently came out as a furry. It's been a rough four months for the goodguys. Maybe by design, as #GG as a whole seemed to suffer a "perfect storm" of events that disrupted us in ways very convenient for certain parties.
All that being said, 8chan is finally back online and recovering at its new address of 8kun.top. /gamergatehq/ has returned as well, addressed in the customary fashion. The site is working out a few minor bugs, but the communities are finally starting to recover, and the site now has its own in-house DDoS prevention software that is keeping the jackals mostly at bay. Our large communities survived in the interim by turning to the darknet as well as a self-healing clearnet Webring of "bunker" sites. The second largest of these bunkers is still online and holding a significant part of 8chan's old userbase, and it remains to be seen if they will be coming home or staying put. For #GG's part we should be recovered enough to get some things done within the coming weeks, probably after the Christmas Stalingrad season. Related to the subject of 8chan and #GG, I think its finally time for me to weigh in a bit on the KiA meta issues in a public manner. Lord knows I don't have to tell anybody here, mods or users, anything about the problems your board is facing. I have my private thoughts on that and I've made them known to the staff already. But what hasn't ever been addressed amounts to a pair of elephants in the room, and I would like to spare some oxygen to talk about them.
The first thing is a brief reminder of who your allies are. When #GamerGate kicked off, the pro-#GG side began as a huge coalition centered around three hubs: The imageboard community, KiA, and Twitter Front. Each served a different purpose: Small and classically nasty, 8chan did most of the planning and think-tank work, and had an informal network of people (including yours truly) carrying information back and forth between the three hubs and helping everyone coordinate. Huge and mild-mannered KiA could throw weight of numbers behind operations and served as a fantastic recruitment ground on the normie Internet. And chaotic Twitter could raise hell, apply social pressure, and grant massive public exposure to our efforts. A great system that we all collectively leveraged to great effect. There's just one problem: KiA seems to have forgotten who the 8chan hub is made up of. 8chan #GG was comprised of three factions. A hidden hub (/v/ #GG), a public "honeypot" hub (/gg/ - /gghq/), and the "Shekel Shoah" operation (/pol/).
Yes, THAT /pol/
Not to put too fine a point on it, but your allies in this thing from day one, including the minds behind Operation Disrespectful Nod, have been /pol/ in all their warts and triumphs, and to this day 8chan #GG remains a joint /pol/-/v/ project. How this was common knowledge in 2014-2015 and has somehow slipped beyond the veil of the obvious here beats me. You already know, in your heart of hearts, why I'm bringing this up. As a moderate lurker with intimate knowledge of the hub communities it has become quite apparent to me that the KiA of today has manifested something beyond the "agree to disagree" deference that signified that branch of the alliance for the first few years. There is a certain visible intolerance of "/pol/-types" on the part of both the mods and the community that has taken root here, that was not here in the first two or three years, and that is (at least in my opinion) fueling a good portion of your community fracture. /pol/, for their part, has never liked Reddit, but have always been happy to work together with this specific community in accomplishing a common goal. It is with high irony that I can state that they are more tolerant than you are, at this point. Those are sharp words, but they're sharp for the sake of honesty and not for the sake of insult. In the beginning we all set our political and cultural differences aside and became one community. Now something has elevated political differences in importance and we are fracturing as a result. From my experience, KiA2 resonates with more of the original "attitude" that once defined KiA. A certain moderated rowdiness and willingness to disregard our differences that I can't quite put to words. And yet it still feels like it is missing something from the absence of respectable viewpoints and personae that remain cloistered here. Pause and give that some thought if you will, before you read into the next paragraph.
Much has been said, including by myself, on the subject of "mission creep." We had no shortage of people pushing for #GG to be about more than just gaming media, even as far back as December of the first year. They were roundly, and loudly, and repeatedly, and rightly told to stuff it by the majority. To paraphrase IA in the Quinnspiracy videos, "if all of us together can't even clean up something as puny as the gaming media, what hope does anyone have of fixing the bigger issues?" Keep focus. Stay on target. Keep digging. Send those emails. And damn if we didn't! Millions in ad revenue up in flames, Gawker torpedoed, enough corporate fear and fury to deluge us in hitpieces and hate articles and we just surfed the wave higher as we watched them sink all the while. Any suggested diversion from that path immediately reeked of shill tactics. An underhanded effort to unfocus the autism laser. Indeed we had a traitor faction within our own ranks create and propagate the "ethics cuck" meme specifically to split our community and drive us toward politics and anti-SJW warfare instead of fighting our war in gaming. I personally fought alongside many others to put a stop to that. That happened in 2015! But whereas our victories are almost universally counted in what we have destroyed, not much gets said about the culture #GamerGate created.
Tech-savvy and Internet savvy meme connoisseurs Wide awake and aware of media propaganda and bias (redpilled) A developed taste for grassroots activism A developed hatred for censorship, whether in art or points of view
One quarter million people, with a reach of over three million. That's how big #GG was at our peak. Smaller forces have toppled governments. Now consider the state of the gaming media today, compared to pre-#GG. Yes, its still trash. But for years now the likes of Kotaku haven't dared to antagonize and demonize gamers the way they did to us in 2014. They learned a very painful lesson. Undisclosed conflicts of interest are much more rare now as well. While they're still pumping out "woke" garbage articles and clickbait, the original cassus belli of #GG has largely gone away since the fight was never about their generic quality but rather their brazen collusion to attack and silence gamer culture. Its only if you're holding out for vindication of #GG, an apology for their past behavior, or engaging (as in my case with Kuchera) a blood vendetta against the few remaining figures in our rogue's gallery that #GG's original conflict really has any gas left in it. We've been in "watchdog mode" for nearly four years, and there has been comparatively little to watch. That isn't a judgement, but I think its a valid (and somewhat welcome) observation. We have no realistic power to make the games media good, but we succeeded in hurting them as payback, and making them more ethical to prevent further big issues. For the main, basic, simplest goal that more or less everyone agreed with in 2014, #GamerGate has apparently won the war. Or at least reduced it to no more than an occasional mopping-up operation. Now all those SJW-aware, redpilled, Internet savvy gamers who hate media bias and censorship and have a taste for activism can just go home.
There is a fly in that ointment, however. Over the long course of #GG we learned something about our opponents in the media. Both in the games media that created the lies about us from whole cloth, and the mainstream media who happily backed their play to spin a narrative: We learned their motivations. Beginning with GamesJournoPros we learned that the major players and gatekeepers in the games media shared certain political sensibilities that justified everything they did. When they colluded behind closed doors, it was with other people who shared their political sensibilities. When they circled the wagons and defended each other from criticism, it was on the basis of their political sensibilities. When they lashed out at gamer culture it was to direct others who shared their political sensibilities to attack us. When we appealed to higher authorities we were denied on the basis of different political sensibilities. When our voices were censored from seemingly the entire Internet, it was on the basis of not having the right political sensibilities. When Wikileaks took notice of us, they warned us that the corruption and bias we were seeing was "mirrored at the very top." And for #GG's culture who is now aware and sensitive to the presence of media bias and corruption and who have knowledge of these motivations, we can now see those same political sensibilities driving enormous problems at every level of life from local politics to Hollywood to Presidential elections. And for people with a taste for activism, it is not something that can be dismissed as "not my problem" while still being true to yourself. There are four lights, afterall. With this state of affairs looming in the foreground, there is a very reasonable appeal in using the downtime resident in "watchdog mode" #GG to think and talk about the bigger problems stemming from the same sources, and perhaps eventually formulating some sort of activist solutions to improve the situation. In 2014, 2015, or in my opinion even 2016 I would argue that this would be "mission creep." Premature and dangerous with so much still up in the air. Today, five years hence and with so little on our plate, it now seems much more like a natural evolution of goals driven by the core culture of #GamerGate itself. The community is changing its goals because it has grown into change, and not because its hand is being forced or manipulated. Take a moment to reflect on this, and then consider the events and attitudes that split your community in light of it, and perhaps things will become more understandable without the animosity. Its better to have strange bedfellows than to fight alone.
Finally I would like to address something that I think is sorely needed. The few of you who know me personally know I already have more project irons in the fire than I can handle on a given day, so I'd like to pitch this as an idea to the more Reddit-savvy technical folks here. I call the concept "Salvation." Imagine a custom fork of Gab's open-source Dissenter application, but tailor-made for Reddit. Allowing anyone to comment and reply to any Reddit thread via a third party overlay that the Reddit admins have no power to enforce against.
Imagine it. You could post whatever you wanted "on Reddit" again. The use of such an app could be integrated into a board's culture. On the surface where normies lurk you would see only the clean, advertiser friendly milquetoast nonsense of the Reddit administrators. Yet then established members of the community could go beneath and say what they really think with no oversight from Reddit's admin staff. Real discussions and activism could happen again, using Reddits infrastructure to build and maintain communities, and yet placing the dedicated members beyond the reach of Reddits Byzantine TOS and redname whimsy. Free speech could be restored sitewide for the cost of a browser app and a sticky telling everyone where to find it.
Thank you as always for reading. Cheers, KiA.

Develop games and loyalty systems. They are the real deal!

@egordeev: “I gather that many are mistaken in thinking that the Internet of Money necessarily implies digitized national money used to pay for everything and everywhere. The same ideas were taking hold in the ’90s when everyone expected all content to be professional and to copy newspapers, compact disks, and other off-line containers.
In reality, the Internet of Money represents relationship systems established by the communities—e.g., in-game coins and loyalty points. Without such kinds of money, efficient growth becomes merely impossible as every system itself programs the corresponding terms of use. Think of it: you do not spend U.S. dollars within World of Warcraft, nor do airlines deposit pure cash to your account (hint: even in case they do, you lose up to 90% of all opportunities; my effective cashback through points reaches 5% from all purchases).
That is why what I am betting on today is not the swap of U.S. dollars or Indian rupees to the blockchain, which will ultimately lead to fierce resistance on the part of governments (cases of Libra and TON), but the development of private money in projects. The more efficient the systems, the faster the national money will be digitized as there simply will be no other option left. People transition from cash to cards, from cards to Apple/Android Pay, from contactless payments to QR codes, and so on.
In-game coins and loyalty points are a ‘Trojan horse’ strategy blockchains can adopt. The gaming industry rakes in the largest revenues among the broader entertainment market, superseding all others combined. Loyalty is what every business needs, and as we all know, marketing costs per returning customer are ten times lower. In both cases, thanks to blockchain, the following model is perfectly implemented: one can be assured that millions of people will receive their funds and be later able to use them inside the system or transfer them to their friends. Maximum security, highest uptime possible, protection from balance tampering, extremely low infrastructure costs. Both coins and points have already become part of contemporary IT systems, so you will not have to persuade anyone on the benefits of the transition to decentralized ledgers, and even more so, to digitize anything.
Now, let us take a look from a regulatory perspective. Watchdog agencies are indifferent to where you store user coins and points—be it MySQL or Minter blockchain—their main concern is whether you pay corporate taxes. Just like with the common digital assets that have been in use for a few decades now.
I am confident that the years 2020 and 2021 will first give a head start to these two directions as demand for solutions is colossal—all users want to entertain themselves, and all users want to benefit from taking part in the systems. Consider the idea that loyalty gamification is one of the most efficient formats of audience engagement and retention (raise your coefficients as you level up), and vice versa: special loyalty programs for players (invite your friends) allow businesses to get products similar in functionality yet diverse in terms of potential use cases and applications.
There is no need to exaggerate and try to give everyone in the world a Bitcoin so as to create a single free market of money. What is needed, though, is attending to seizable problems facing projects and businesses. By solving them, we will acquire grateful users; those who will stop running from crypto like the plague and thinking of it as ‘something out of thin air.’ Once they can buy WoW armor or flight tickets, no one will care about how it is called—people will only want it to continue to work just as cool.”

Continuous Pool Disconnection & 0 Mh/s Speeds

What's up internet/fellow miners. About a week ago I've made the decision to turn my gaming PC to a mining rig. I've had some success solo mining with nicehashminer (Bitcoin miner) but decided that it would be better to mine Ethereum. I've followed the guide and kept coming across these issues. . . I don't know if it's because my config files are whack or another underlying issue.
(EDIT) Connected to us1.ethermine.org:4444 now i'm getting different issues. Here are my most recent logs.

ETH News/Dapp Compilation

Hi guys. This is a list I started just recently for personal use to keep track of all the great news we’ve gotten recently for Ethereum. I’m trying my best to categorize the articles by either what type of industry ETH is helping, or how ETH is being helped (Infrastructure section).
It is in no way a comprehensive list and I’d like to open it up to everyone here to contribute/pick apart. I’ve got an idea for basically an “onboarding packet” for Ethereum that will include a rundown of all this stuff, some defi growth stats, list of popular dapps, user guide for Metamask (None of which will come from me but will be compiled all into one place for the benefit of newbs).
I think any non-believer who reads all of the articles in this list, or even just the snippets I included, would be hard pressed to say “ETH isn’t used” or “crypto is a scam” …unless they are just a total moron. Apologies for bad formatting.
Charity/utilitarianism:
https://www.coindesk.com/oxfam-trials-delivery-of-disaster-relief-using-ethereum-stablecoin-dai “Oxfam has previously distributed help to Vanuatu villagers using cash, but the time taken for ID checks and bank visits was an obstacle, the charity representative said. Onboarding a new user for cash aid took around an hour, signing up for a DAI card takes six minutes, Micky wrote. Plus, it made the whole process more transparent.”
Infrastructure:
http://hitcryptonews.com/2019/04/17/ernst-young-ey-unveils-ethereum-blockchain-based-nightfall-protocol/
private UK tax/audit company with over 35 Billion in revenue "Instead of developing a private iteration, EY has announced that its Nightfall protocol will run on top of the public Ethereum network. Further, the multi-national accounting conglomerate has taken a unique strategy to intellectual property. The company said that it will not only open-source the protocol code but also put it in the public domain with absolutely no license at all."
https://blog.cloudflare.com/cloudflare-ethereum-gateway/
"Today, as part of Crypto Week 2019, we are excited to announce Cloudflare's Ethereum Gateway, where you can interact with the Ethereum network without installing any additional software on your computer."

https://www.coindesk.com/samsung-unveils-cryptocurrency-wallet-dapps-for-galaxy-s10-phone
“According to a report from CoinDesk Korea published Sunday, the Samsung Blockchain Wallet is currently compatible only with ether (ETH) and ethereum-based ERC20 tokens. Bitcoin is not yet supported, despite the logo appearing on earlier pre-release presentation images.”
https://www.coindesk.com/operas-browser-with-built-in-crypto-wallet-launches-for-iphones
“Dapps can be accessed by typing their address directly in the browser, avoiding the need to use third-party extensions” https://www.bitcoinisle.com/2019/04/05/ethereum-eth-former-white-house-deputy-ctos-blockchain-startup-raises-3-7m-in-seed-funding/ Former whitehouse Chief Technology Officer raising money for an Ethereum side-chain. The chain WILL use the public chain as a final authority, so not just another private chain.
https://cointelegraph.com/news/big-four-auditing-firm-pwc-releases-cryptocurrency-auditing-software
Per the release, the tool newly added to PwC’s Halo auditing suite can be used to “provide assurance services for entities engaging in cryptocurrency transactions.” The firm claims that, with the new addition, the Halo suite permits PwC to provide independent evidence of private-public key pairing (to establish crypto asset ownership), and gather information about transactions and balances from blockchains.
Supply Chain/Logistics:
https://decrypt.co/7621/farmer-trials-blockchain-supply-chain-app-says-its-better-than-excel
“With a spreadsheet, you have to take the farmers’ word on faith. But Treum provides a timestamp and a geolocation—tied to a specific, pre-selected field—that demonstrates, irrevocably, that the crop was grown where the farmer said it was grown. This data is then transferred, in the form of a single token, to the Ethereum network, where it cannot be overwritten.”
https://www.thedrinksbusiness.com/2019/06/idealwine-launches-authentication-tool/
"Cyrille Jomand, iDealwine’s CEO, said: “Bottles verified by iDealwine are equipped with an inviolable RFID TAG which permanently guarantees the link between the bottle of wine and the information contained and transferred in the blockchain.”
Finance:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/hanktucke2019/06/17/polish-bank-alior-uses-public-ethereum-blockchain-for-new-document-authentication-feature/#120959f244a6

The entity appears to exhibit the same deceptive characteristics as another entity, Bitcoin Revolution. The MFSA had previously issued a public warning on January 25, 2019 and August 29, 2019 at Bitcoin Revolution. Bitcoin Future is not a registered company in Malta, nor is it an entity operating under the provisional provisions of Section 62 of the Virtual Financial Assets Act, nor is it authorized to provide any financial services in Malta. In addition, the information obtained by the MFSA indicates that Bitcoin Future may be an international “fast get rich” cryptocurrency scam. Hence, the SEC’s restraining order, which prevented the Telegram Open Network (TON) network from meeting its launch deadline, was unwarranted. However, the SEC calls this five-month postponement “unacceptable” in the recently submitted documents. Furthermore, the securities watchdog states that the regulator is “practically guaranteed” to break the law again if given a chance to distribute its native Gram token.

BTC — Yesterday, BTC maintained a weak rebound at a low level, with a 24-hour inflow of 450 million yuan, mainly USD. On the technical side, yesterday’s weak small rebound was an attempt of oversold rebound by the bulls on the technical side, but as a result, the weak of the Bulls did not change, and the volume could continue to shrink. At the same time, the long and short average began to form a strong resistance level towards the coupling range, and the short trend in the medium term was intensifying. If there is no decent rebound in the past two days, the resistance level will be broken up, and there is a high probability of downward test. 7000 support, or even $6100. In terms of operation, it is recommended to level the spot position temporarily and wait for further signals.

Weekly news review (April 13-19)

Weekly news review (April 13-19)
Good day, everyone!
It's been a while so let's take a look at last week's news highlights!
https://preview.redd.it/lrzvu6lxwyt21.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=5f858779e4fee01553344ca618fc60c7db1be7a1
Russia fines Facebook $47 over citizens' data privacy dispute
Russia has fined Facebook with 3,000 rubles, roughly $47, for not complying with the country's controversial Data Localization law. In December last year, Russian Internet watchdog Roskomnadzor (Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies, and Mass Communications) sent notifications to Twitter and Facebook asking them to provide information about the location of servers that store the personal data of its citizens.
Russia is not the first country to enforce such law on foreign tech companies. In May 2016, Iran also imposed new regulations on all foreign messaging and social media apps to move 'data and activity' associated with Iranian citizens onto servers in Iran within one year. China also passed amendments for data localization in late 2016 that would force "critical information infrastructure operators" to store its citizens' data within the nation's borders.

Hackers compromise Microsoft employee to access Outlook email accounts
Microsoft has started notifying some Outlook.com users that a hacker was able to access accounts for months earlier this year. The software giant discovered that a support agent’s credentials were compromised for its webmail service, allowing unauthorized access to some accounts between January 1st and March 28th, 2019. It’s not clear how many users have been affected by the breach, or who was involved in obtaining access to Outlook.com email accounts. The hackers weren’t able to steal login details or other personal information, but out of caution, Microsoft is recommending that affected users reset their passwords.

Windows is slower after April 2019 updates according to users
Users are reporting that after installing the latest Microsoft updates, Windows has suddenly become slow and programs are taking forever to open. Apparently, there is a conflict between the latest Windows updates and Sophos, Avast, and Avira antivirus software that is causing Windows to freeze or updates to not finish installing. The issues that users are experiencing include Windows taking a long time to start or reboot, unable to start programs, lag in games, excessive disk activity, video streaming issues, and other similar problems.

Crypto markets report modest gains, gold sees slight losses
Tuesday, April 16 — cryptocurrency markets have registered moderate gains over the past 24 hours, with only Bitcoin SV (BSV) trading in the red among all top 20 coins by market capitalization.
In traditional markets, gold has dropped down by 1% last Tuesday marking its lowest price point this year. The slide is reportedly explained by increased demand for riskier assets like equities, with further reductions in bullion price caused by gains in the U.S. dollar.

Facebook stored millions of Instagram users' passwords in plaintext
Facebook late last month revealed that the social media company mistakenly stored passwords for "hundreds of millions" of Facebook users in plaintext, including "tens of thousands" passwords of its Instagram users as well. Last Thursday Facebook quietly updated its March press release, adding that the actual number of affected Instagram users were not in hundreds of thousands but millions. According to the updated post, Facebook discovered "additional logs of Instagram passwords" stored in a readable format, but added that its investigation revealed that the stored passwords were never "abused or improperly accessed" by any of its employees.

Fantom Confidential — 6. Korean Market Key Learnings — Jan 2019 Research Report
Medium: https://medium.com/fantomfoundation/fantom-confidential-6-korean-market-key-learnings-jan-2019-research-report-ae79498a1633

https://preview.redd.it/i2jsytsct9k21.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2d1878241bc905a73c8c6cbe3d06083541bc53d5

Key Learnings from Jan 2019 Research:

Introduction

Just as large telecommunication companies needed to adjust and evolve with the wide adaptation of the internet, banks and financial institutions will need to adapt and evolve before finding themselves in a disrupted sector. At the same time, companies which are building blockchain technology, products, and financial applications will need to learn how to work with the current financial world, learn from them and evolve alongside them. In that regards, South Korea might actually be the most under-hyped country in cryptocurrency and blockchain world.

South Korea —Investors

For foreign companies such as First, Korea is considered a land of opportunity. The population is filled with early adopters, the domestic market is large, with a few industry giants (i.e. Samsung, LG, Kakao, etc).
Korea is one of the few countries that has nationwide interest in the social and scientific effect of blockchain technology, accompanied with a strong secondary market. Its citizens, local governments, and corporations are all active participants in the blockchain industry, making Korea a strong candidate to be the first for mass adoption of blockchain.
A terrifying economic landscape for South Korean millennials, ultra-high internet speeds, digital culture and tech-savviness have all factored into the exploding petri dish that is the South Korean blockchain scene.
According to some reports, over 3 million Koreans are participating in cryptocurrency trading today, from all facets of life. South Korea is one of the world’s biggest markets for Bitcoin — so it’s no wonder that more than three out of ten salaried workers in the country has invested in cryptocurrencies, according to a study conducted by job portal Saramin.
During the great bull run of 2017, Crypto-related assets became so popular that buyers on Korean exchanges were willing to pay a roughly 32 percent premium on bitcoin and other alternative cryptocurrencies, and Korean ICOs raised unprecedented amounts of money in mere hours.
At one point in November 2017, KRW once accounted for over 50 percent of all transaction volumes among the top 12 cryptocurrencies. Notably, Koreans have a relatively diversified portfolio — KRW accounts for nearly half of global non-BTC market share (54.76 percent), followed by USD (37.22 percent and EUR (3.27 percent) in January 2018.

Government

On the regulation side, Korea is still learning to crawl. The government still has no idea how to tax crypto and the only de facto regulation in Korea now is ‘no regulation’ — counter-intuitively meaning anything related to crypto right now could be illegal.
  • Korean Gov’t: wait-and-see or follow-don’t-lead.
  • Regulatory sandbox laws which are going to be effective from Q1 2019 could be a great opportunity for the government to prepare for setting long-sought permanent rules.
  • Regulation: The government assumed a very clear position — blockchain technology is great and ought to be cultivated, yet cryptocurrencies pose a major threat to innocent investors and these unregulated markets are filled with bad actors. This resulted in two different approaches to these two sides of the industry. On the one hand, regulators followed in China’s footsteps and banned ICOs, imposing harsher measures to protect investors. On the other, the government continuously supported, even subsidized blockchain-based projects and pushed forward the use of blockchain technology within cities and services.
  • Number of public trials subsidized by government has doubled for 2019.
  • Mayor of Korea’s capital city Seoul recently revealed a five-year plan to invest 113.6 billion KRW (approx. $100 million) to transform Seoul into a smart city powered by blockchain. With the Blockchain Urban Plan for 2018–2022, 14 major public services will adopt blockchain.
  • Buying crypto with credit cards, have subsequently been banned by regulators in Seoul. Also, Korean watchdogs have also restricted foreign activity, restraining all foreigners from trading cryptocurrency on Korean exchanges.
  • On a related note, South Korea now considers bitcoin a legal form of currency for the purpose of foreign exchange.

Corporations

Westerners might be stunned by the influence that a few South Korean brands — particularly chaebols (“chae” means wealth or property, “bol” is clan) — wield in Korea. These huge firms — which include Electronics manufacturer Samsung, automaker Hyundai, electronics manufacturer LG, and retailer Lotte — have dominated South Korea’s economy since the country’s economic revolution in the 20th century. They helped make South Korea the world’s fifth-largest exporter with the world’s 11th-largest gross domestic product (GDP). These five companies alone currently control more than 50 percent of the Korean stock exchange in terms of market cap. There companies, along with as many as 45 companies in Korea, are involved in blockchain projects in one manner or another, be it a cryptocurrency exchange, blockchain-based enterprise solution for small companies, or new but promising and risky platforms or tokens.
Two of Korea’s IT conglomerates, Naver and Daum Kakao, have each executed reverse ICOs and created their own blockchain projects — Link and Klaytn, respectively — as the foundation for their future blockchain ecosystem. Klaytn recently announced the first batch of strategic partners comprised of dApps from different industries, showing its commitment to blockchain.
Samsung, LG and the other chaebols will keep pushing innovation forward and developing practical use cases. Monachain(LG), Nexledger(Samsung), Klaytn(Daum Kakao) — these are just some of the names you should expect to hear more often in 2019 and the upcoming years. Through these chaebols, blockchain technology will continue to seep into Korean’s daily lives in many aspects including gaming, payments, healthcare, banking, and many more. If these conglomerates will push blockchain adoption through their products and services, it would drive out the terrifying economic situation that pushed Korean millennials to seek out other means of income, pushing many into the cryptocurrency market as a way to make a quick buck.

Sampson | brave.com @BraveSampson I am so thankful to have a role in what @Brave is accomplishing. This week I spoke on a blockchain, security, and privacy panel. I followed that up with a Reddit AMA. Then I spent 3 days at UC Berkeley, encouraging students to build a safer, more secure web. Could not be happier! 2:26 AM - Nov 5, 2018

Future goals for Brave!
BrendanEich @BrendanEich Goal for 2019 is to get on-platform volume up as percentage of all volume, see how many users we can bring on board, get ad deals paying. If that comes together then BAT SDK and more apps. 6:18 PM - Nov 5, 2018

Johnny Ryan tweets about his letter to the US National Telecommunications and Information Administration and outlines in a seven part tweet what should be done and how.
Johnny Ryan‏ @johnnyryan I just wrote to @NTIAgov the US National Telecommunications and Information Administration @CommerceGov to share @Brave's view that there should be a #GDPR for the United States to protect innovation and interoperability - and to protect #privacy. Nov 6

Sampson trying to see how “Brave” Elon Musk is...
Sampson | brave.com @BraveSampson @elonmusk If you're in the market for a new browser for your cars, I'd encourage you to check out what we're building at @brave. We cut out ads and trackers (accounting for more than 50% of mobile data), making us up to 8x faster than others 📷 7:13 PM - Nov 7, 2018

Hmmm… Possible use case for BAT?
Sampson | brave.com @BraveSampson What if your ride-sharing app offered you a few private commercials or ads to subsidize your trip? Ride comes out to $7, but you watched 3 ads en route. You can apply the $BAT to your ride, tip your driver, add it to a friend's account, or let it accumulate later use. 📷 7:29 PM - Nov 7, 2018

Sampson gives some tipping tips, plus sys Youtube tipping is coming soon.
Dave Craige📷 @davecraige @BraveSampson quick question, is there any way I could give away $5 in $BAT today to a YouTuber?

@BrendanEich said I should ask you.

Sampson | brave.com @BraveSampson You could pin a contribution to their channel, but it won't be $5 exactly. Alternatively, if they have a blog or website you can leverage the new Tipping feature to give a one-off contribution of 1, 5, or 10 BAT. We'll support one-off Tipping for YouTubers soon. 9:22 PM - Nov 7, 2018

Great question on Reddit: When I send a tip, how does that website, YT Channel, ect ect get the money and do they get the full 100% of the tip?
See the answer here: https://www.reddit.com/BATProject/comments/9umpj3/when_i_send_a_tip_how_does_that_website_yt/

User to user referrals coming?
Brendan Eich @BrendanEich User to user referrals are on plan, and then you will have a dashboard that gives you both creators you support and your referral code and stats. 1:02 AM - Nov 8, 2018

Brave = Can’t be evil.
Lance Leonard @FluentTypo Replying to @BraveSampson But can you tell me that ads, today, aren't tracked? Even BATs?
I'm very dubious about that...and, even though we've thrown Flash/Silverlight to the winds, you know where my advocacy comes from.
DNT.
Let users choose whether they're part of the game...or _not_.

Sampson | brave.com @BraveSampson Oh, today's ads are most certainly tracking you. They're auctioning you off to the highest bidder in most cases.
Brave Ads won't, and can't. It's a design principle—"Can't be Evil." 4:33 AM - Nov 8, 2018

News You Should Know:

Google Chrome’s Users Take a Back Seat to Its Bottom Line
Google Chrome is the most popular browser in the world. Chrome routinely leads the pack in features for security and usability, most recently helping to drive the adoption of HTTPS. But when it comes to privacy, specifically protecting users from tracking, most of its rivals leave it in the dust.
In the documents that define how the Web works, a browser is called a user agent. It’s supposed to be the thing that acts on your behalf in cyberspace. If the massive data collection appetite of Google’s advertising- and tracking-based business model are incentivizing Chrome to act in Google’s best interest instead of yours, that’s a big problem—one that consumers and regulators should not ignore.

Privacy Group Asks European Regulators To Test GDPR Against Seven Tech Companies (Featuring Brave’s Johnny Ryan!)
Privacy advocates in the UK filed a series of complaints Thursday against Criteo, Tapad, Quantcast, Acxiom, Oracle, Equifax and Experian, questioning whether consumer profiling is legal under GDPR.
Watchdog group Privacy International is claiming that the way many ad tech and data companies use data is in direct contravention to Europe’s new privacy law. The group is urging regulators in the UK, Ireland and France to use those seven companies as test cases for whether GDPR really has teeth in practice.

Smart usage of Brave!
Dean Jones 😳 👌‏ @whodeani Replying to @BraveSampson @keranm and 3 others It works. I use Brave for watching Youtube... even via my Apple TV using Airplay (as using the Youtube app on Apple TV is riddled with advertising). 11:19 PM - 5 Nov 2018

CryptoKid @bitcoinkarate There is a lot of hate against $BAT and @brave that I have seen recently. This team has one of the FEW working products in our space. They continue to strive and push their vision update after update. 1:32 AM - 8 Nov 2018
